There exist expectations from invoices, particularly women, in fulfilling their obligations in performing pink jobs. Pink jobs are those in service oriented, but mostly filled by women. Such jobs include those in the nursing profession, stewardess, nannies, or jobs done within the private home. The salaries paid reflect the bias towards women. As women are expected to fill these roles, the salaries for these positions are not very well paid. Men have been filling these roles, but are frowned upon as the stereotypical viewpoint that these positions should be filled by women. There also exists an emotional expectation that comes with the job. As with the nanny, nurse, or stewardess a type of emotional display is necessary in performing their duties of eliciting a certain response from the customer. A natural expectation of women working exclusively in pink jobs is expected as these jobs require the individual to serve almost in a motherly role of comforting the customer. An image of mom reinforces the image of women serving in these roles. In the case of a firefighter or EMS worker, the same emotional responses are needed in reassuring a distressed individual that a particular situation they may find themselves in will be fine. Dissonance is required in these jobs, in contrast caring or deep acting in pink jobs is the qualities that are required in fulfilling such duties.
The expected emotions from women in performing pink jobs may also contribute to the prejudicial point of view men have of women in working in the corporate world. The glass ceiling is very real as the bias attitude that women can not succeed in a corporate environment. Women easily have all of the qualities needed to succeed in the white male dominated hierarchy.
The only attribue women seem to have, according to men, is the ability to compromise. The very thought that women compromise and men are more aggressive in implementing policies are not the qualities to successful leadership. One of the keys to successful leadership is the ability of having a vision. The ability to having an idea that is outside the box and the ability to take a chance in introducing such ideas are qualities that make a leader. Conveying a vision to a subordinates and inspiring them to follow is a characteristic that crosses the boundaries of gender. Communication is and always will be key in getting a message across to individuals. If a message or vision can not be communicated in a way as to inspire, then the best ideas can die on the vine before having a chance of coming into fruition.
Two types of leadership qualities, transformational and transactional, are used in the corporate world in accomplish the mission. In accomplishing a vision, only transformation can be successful. Today’s world the employee is more a partner in accomplishing the team goal. The worker is most definitely being defined as the service oriented worker or simply a laborer. Classical theory still applies in the directives they receive from management and transformational leadership is not necessary. The laborer can not question and have their work reflect as such big the ethics of a supervisor come in question. Is the service industry, judgment is the third key in leadership. Leading by example inspires those who work for or with you. If they members believe in the leader then it is easier to get them to believe in the message and accomplish the goal.
Transformation leadership combines the qualities of group interaction and bringing out the best qualities of all the members involved in a process. Classical theory and transactional is more of a process of driving the work force towards a goal. The world, as always, is changing as is the divide between the types of worker that will be filing the future jobs within the U.S. workforce. The service oriented industry or any industry in which those who are required to think and work with advanced technology will be the thinkers of tomorrow. The word boss will only be necessary in the circles of labor and supervisor. As in the manual labor industry the relationship or culture is no different today thank nearly two hundred years ago when the industrial revolution was in its early stages.
Today understanding diversity, communication, cooperation, acceptance of new ideas, and having the ability to not only change but allow members to express their ideas is the new form of leadership necessary in being successful in the changing global market. Transformational leadership stands alone as the style needed in moving forward in the 21st century.
Women and minorities have been aware of the glass or concrete ceiling. Both have needed categorized based on their gender or color and in some cases both. As non-white male individuals are being pigeon holed in to certain jobs, especially in the case of women, certain qualities in performing these duties are believed to belong uniquely to these individuals. The unfortunately terms as glass ceiling and pink jobs still have meaning in the 21st century. Companies have moved forward in finding innovative ways to be more productive and retain the happy employee. The fabric of society still has not moved beyond the stereotypes or the expectation what roles should be assigned to certain groups in the world of labor. As time passes, acceptance is the only answer to the changing world.
